Benefits of learning a language
Learning a language can be beneficial in numerous ways. First, you can have an easier time travelling around the world and learn about different cultures. Also, language learning can help you to meet new people around the world and potentially make new friends. Furthermore, learning languages can strengthen your brain. Olly Richards, a teacher, author, and language learner, states that years of learning languages can improve your better concentration and decision-making skills.
Which language do you want to learn?
One of the toughest challenges in the beginning is choosing a language to learn. Language Simp, an American YouTuber who posts satirical videos about language learning, illustrates the struggles of picking a language to learn. Based on your interests in different cultures, ChatGPT can help you narrow down what language you want to learn and provide you beginner-friendly resources like Duolingo and Babbel to learn the language.
Overcoming Language Exchange Challenges: Seeking Conversation Partners
Once you get comfortable in the basics of a language, it’s vital to practice using it by finding people who speak your target language, also known as the language you are studying.
One of the most common ways to practice your target language is finding a language exchange partner on sites like Tandem. On one hand, I found wonderful people who are willing to talk to me in my target language, French. I unfortunately had to deal with some people who treated it as if it were a dating app. Another avenue of practicing your target language is to find a language tutor on online platforms like italki where you pay for individuals lessons and group classes with various tutors. However, this option can be costly. While traditional methods like language exchange partners and online tutors offer valuable opportunities for language practice, they come with their own set of challenges like encountering inappropriate behavior or facing financial constraints.
This is where ChatGPT steps in, offering a unique and accessible alternative to traditional methods.

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI that can talk to people in a way that resembles human-like conversations. This AI chatbot can respond to a wide variety of questions and generate various types of written content, such as essays, code, emails, poems, and itineraries. ChatGPT can also be used as a personal tutor you can use 24/7. Some ways you can use ChatGPT in language learning are using it as a conversation tool, learning vocabulary, creating a lesson plan, and being exposed to more advanced resources in specific topics, such as psychology and technology.
Addressing ChatGPT’s Limitations
Nevertheless, ChatGPT has its own limitations. Even though ChatGPT is primarily trained based on text in English, it is also strong in Spanish and French. Moreover, it is decent in Korean, Japanese, and German. Sadly, ChatGPT is not strong in Mandarin Chinese.
Conversation Practice Made Easy
ChatGPT can help you practice your conversational skills in your target language. You can simulate real-life conversations in different scenarios, including but not limited to, ordering food at a restaurant, asking for directions, and talking to the receptionists at a hotel.
While ChatGPT can be valuable in conversation practice, keep in mind that it cannot replicate conversations with people.
Learn New Vocabulary
You can also acquire new vocabulary with ChatGPT with a vocabulary list or in context of a text generated by ChatGPT.
Create a Lesson Plan
Are you unsure what you want to prioritize in language learning? You can ask ChatGPT to create a customized lesson plan based on your proficiency in the language and your goals.
As an example, I asked ChatGPT to create a personalized curriculum to help me study French with the goal of expanding my vocabulary beyond my interests, such as mental health, psychology, computer science, books, and current events. I desired to know more words in climate change and politics. I informed it that I have an intermediate level of French.
From there, ChatGPT generated a personalized curriculum for me.
Exposure to Resources in Topics in Your Target Language
Furthermore, you can use ChatGPT to help you learn about books, websites, and other resources in your target language. If you are interested in learning about specific topics, you can ask ChatGPT books, websites, and other resources about those topics in your target language.
Leveraging ChatGPT for Dynamic Language Learning
ChatGPT emerges as a versatile language learning tool. With its ability to serve as a 24/7 language tutor that can customize lesson plans according to the users’ proficiency in a language, ChatGPT provides a lot of accessibility and flexibility in language learning.
While ChatGPT can enhance language learning, it should be used in conjunction with other methods of language learning, like reading in your target language.
